Pineapple Support Launches Racial Trauma Support Group

LOS ANGELES — Pineapple Support is launching a racial trauma and stress support group for performers of color led by therapist Jamila Dawson, LMFT. The group will begin meeting online tomorrow and continue every Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. (PDT) for six weeks.

The sessions will address "the damages caused by racial trauma due to exposure from institutional racism, discrimination, harassment, community violence and related news and social media," a rep explained.

Dawson will lead the discussion of the impact of traumatic stress on behaviour, relationships, coping and parenting, continued the rep, as well as "strategies that promote self-regulation, safety, sense of empowerment, self-worth, self-determination and emotional confidence of Black Americans."

Pineapple Support was founded in 2018 by Leya Tanit. The organization, a registered nonprofit in the United States and a registered charity in the United Kingdom, has connected over 1,000 adult performers to mental health services, including free and low-cost therapy, counseling and emotional support.

Learn more about Jamila Dawson here. Space in the group is limited to 10-12 individuals; no previous experience with therapy is necessary. Click here for additional details.
