AEBN Studies Rise of 'Taboo' Adult Content

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network (AEBN) has published a study of  "taboo" content based on 20 years of sales data available to the network.

The study examines data dating back to 2001 and breaks down the revenue generated by taboo content sales into straight and gay sectors. 

Prior to December 2014, AEBN's straight theater system did not have a specific "Taboo" category, so data before that time is based on a breakdown of related categories.

"Taboo" revenues were at zero or nearly zero until early 2007, when they started a slow, halting climb to a peak around the beginning of 2017 that has stayed relatively stable.

In AEBN's gay theater system, the "Taboo" category was introduced in January 2017, so the study again relied on data from related categories.

The revenue spikes in gay taboo-themed content started earlier than 2017, however, and have been much more volatile than straight taboo content:
