CYBERSPACE — More than 40 reels of previously unknown music by the late, pioneering composer Patrick Cowley have been unearthed.
San Francisco-based music label Dark Entries revealed the news last week in a tweet (see below). “Just when you think there is no more,” they wrote, “you ask Patrick Cowley’s studio mate if you can look in their attic and with a phone flashlight you discover 40 more reels of music from 1974-79.”
Cowley, often credited as a pioneer of electronic and Hi-NRG dance music, achieved fame in the late 1970s for his synthesizer work, including with Sylvester on such hits as “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” as well as an influential 15-minute remix of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and a number of club play chart-toppers.
In the early ‘80s, shortly before his death from AIDS in late 1982, at age 32, Cowley also provided the soundtrack to a number of gay adult films produced by John Coletti’s Fox Studio.
"In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in his work," writes Crack Magazine. "Dark Entries have led the charge."
The label partnered with Honey Soundsystem on a series of reissues of Cowley's porn soundtracks, starting with “Dazed” (2013) and continuing with “Muscle Up” (2015) and “Afternooners” (2017).
