Adam & Eve Pulls Radio Ads in Response to 'O&A' Censorship

NEW YORK — Adult retailer Adam & Eve has pulled its ads from XM Radio's "Opie & Anthony Show" in protest of the duo's recent 30-day suspension for uttering comments that they had been instructed to leave unsaid.

Katy Zvolerin, director of public relations for Adam & Eve, told XBIZ that the company decided to pull its ads for the same number of days that O&A will be off the air, and in the 24 hours since Adam & Eve announced its decision, listeners have noticed.

"We're surprised that we've received a number of emails from listeners saying 'Shame on [XM],' and 'We support free speech, too,'" Zvolerin said.

She also said that she's received emails from listeners who said they've never shopped at Adam & Eve stores before, but after seeing the company is so proactive, they're planning on visiting the website.

"We certainly didn't expect that," Zvolerin said.

Chad Davis, Adam & Eve's director of marketing said that the company supports free speech, and that it was initially founded on 1st Amendment rights.

"We cannot, in good conscience, ignore the fact that Opie and Anthony were suspended over comments that the FCC has no jurisdiction over," Davis said.

He also said Adam & Eve has gotten word that thousands of customers have cancelled their XM subscriptions.

"It's obvious that America is taking the issue of free speech seriously," Davis said.

And until the "Opie & Anthony Show" returns to XM on June 15, Adam & Eve will offer listeners a 50-percent discount on many online items by using code "XM202" at checkout.
