Adam & Eve Asks: How Old Were You When You First Had Sex?

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — AdamAndEve.com is back this month with new results from its annual sex survey in which the company asked more than 1,000 adults about how old they were when they first had sexual intercourse.

Only two percent of the females and five percent of the males polled said they lost their virginity before age 13. Most of the respondents, 52 percent of the females and 49 percent of the males, admitted they first had sex between age 13 and 18. 38 percent of the females and 34 percent of the males said they first had intercourse between age 18 and 23, and 8 percent of the women and 12 percent of the men were over age 23.

“As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I find these numbers encouraging,” said Dr. Kat Van Kirk, resident sexologist for Adam & Eve. “Sex is an amazing, powerful gift, but one that teenagers — especially young teenagers — are often ill-equipped to handle.

“Engaging in sexual activity before you are ready physically and emotionally can lead to a number of long term issues,” Dr. Kat continued. “I’m pleased to see that more young people are choosing to wait to have sex than in years past.”

The web-based survey, conducted by an independent third party survey company, of more than 1,000 American adults age 18 and up, was sponsored by Adam & Eve to study sexual preferences and practices.

"Sex Chat with Dr. Kat" can be found on podcasts through iTunes or DrKat.com. Her book, “The Married Sex Solution: A Realistic Guide to Saving Your Sex Life,” can be found on Amazon.com.
