Vienna Library Starts Erotica Hotline Fundraiser

VIENNA, Austria — Vienna's City Hall has launched a "sex hotline" to raise money for remodeling and expansion of the capital's main public library, officials said Tuesday.

Callers pay 53 cents a minute to listen to Anne Bennent, an Austrian stage and film star, read passages from the Vienna library's "Secreta" collection of 1,200 works of erotic fiction from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the library said.

Callers will hear passages from German-language writers like Hans Carl Artmann, Annemarie Weber and Ferdinand Lasalle; or writers in German translations like Anaïs Nin.

A library spokeswoman reported Tuesday that more than 150 people have called in, raising more than $300 toward the remodeling campaign.

Officials said the hotline would be operational through May 31.

The local number in Vienna is 0930-128777.
