NEW YORK — Walker J. Thornton, author of “Inviting Desire,” will host a workshop on sexuality and aging at Sex Expo New York 2017.
Presented by Chaturbate and set for Sept. 23-24 at the Brooklyn Expo Center, the consumer-oriented event will feature showcases and product demonstrations from top manufacturers of pleasure products. The Pleasure Chest, serving as official sex education sponsor, will present workshops on a wide variety of topics.
“My talk, ‘Sex After 50? Yes, Yes, Yes!,’ is designed to help individuals look at the range of sexual experiences available as we age,” Thornton said. “I’ll be talking about ways to redefine pleasure and the ways we seek satisfaction. Sex after 50 can be less focused on achieving a specific goal and more focused on an intimate connection as an erotic experience with no beginning or ending point.”
Thornton said that her “work as a speaker, writer and sex educator is informed by my own journey as a divorced woman and as a woman aging in a youth-oriented world.”
“In my own life, both personally and professionally, I see the value in moving away from the idea of orgasm as the ultimate goal,” Thornton said. “Yes, orgasms are fun and energizing and a great way to feel pleasure, but the idea of having to get there can cause us to forget about the other ways we feel pleasure. The changes that many women experience with menopause or past experience can lead to difficulties with achieving orgasms, and the resulting pressure can feel like failure.”
Thornton added, “During my talk at the Sex Expo, I will share anecdotal experiences — mine and others — that reinforce the benefits of rethinking our approach to intimacy.”
Organizers for the Sexual Health Expo (SHE) announced, in early March, that the bicoastal, biannual event was rebranding as Sex Expo — and Sex Expo New York 2017 will be its first East Coast show since the rebranding. Thornton, who has hosted workshops at Sex Expo in the past, said she is looking forward to returning to the event.
“My presentation at the Sex Expo touches on an approach that is sex-positive, unapologetic and matter-of-fact about sexuality and aging,” Thornton said. “I believe older adults want affirmation that an active sex life is absolutely possible — necessary even — for adults over 50.”
