NEW YORK — Sex writer Rachel Kramer Bussel will be holding a workshop on erotic writing at Sex Expo New York 2017, presented by Chaturbate.
Sex Expo New York 2017, to be held Sept. 23-24 at the Brooklyn Expo Center, will feature showcases and product demonstrations from top manufacturers of pleasure products and sex toys. The Pleasure Chest, serving as official sex education sponsor, will present workshops on a wide range of topics.
“At Sex Expo, I’ll be teaching Erotica Writing 101, a workshop I’ve developed over the last decade based on both my own erotic writing career as well as editing over 60 anthologies,” Bussel said. “What I’ve found — especially in the last few years in the wake of the massive success of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ — is that men and women are looking for outlets for their sexual fantasies and storytelling, but don’t always know how to harness that into publishable form. In my workshops, there are no right or wrong answers, but rather, I give students space to explore their creativity and look at the world through an erotic lens.”
Bussel, based in Atlantic City, has edited more than 60 erotic anthologies, including “Come Again: Sex Toy Erotica,” “The Big Book of Orgasms” and the series “The Best Women’s Erotica of the Year.” Bussel’s own erotic stories have been published in over 100 anthologies, including the “Best American Erotica” series and Zane’s books “Succulent” and “Purple Panties.”
“What I hope people walk away with from my Sex Expo workshop — where we will be going through a range of writing exercises — is the desire to keep writing, whether it’s steamy letters to a lover or stories from the perspective of a bold and daring alter ego, or simply an eroticized version of their sexy Saturday night,” Bussel said. “No prior writing experience is necessary. I want them to be fired up about using words in sensual ways and thinking about all the things that turn us on.”
Bussel added, “I also know that most writers want their words to be seen and read; so, I offer advice and resources on getting published. I stumbled into erotica writing when I was failing law school, and learned everything I know on the job though trial and error. But now that I’ve been in this business for 18 years, I want to help others get their first byline. I love nothing more than hearing from students who are getting published for the first time. It’s an exhilarating feeling.”
In early March, organizers for the Sexual Health Expo (SHE) announced that the bicoastal, biannual event was rebranding as Sex Expo — and Sex Expo New York 2017 will be its first East Coast show since the rebranding.
“For those who might be thinking, ‘I want to write erotica, but what will I write about?,’ Sex Expo is the perfect place to get your creative juices flowing because you’ll be surrounded by amazing and varied sex toys that are sure to spark ideas,” Bussel said. “As someone who lived in Brooklyn for 13 years, I think it’s wonderful that the event is being held in such a lively borough — and I look forward to checking out the vendors and other workshops as well.”
