India Blocking Escort Sites, Deeming Them 'Obscene'

MUMBAI — Police here have orders from a magistrate court to block 316 websites with “obscene” content, according to the HindustanTimes.com.

The sites fingered in the orders and deemed obscene specifically involve those that provide escort services.

Indian prosecutor Poornima Kantharia told the Bombay high court that the matter had been referred to the government’s cyber law section for further action.

Kantharia was responding to a query to the court by Mumbai resident Ali Ahmed Siddique, who questioned the takedowns.

Kantharia told the court that the domain registrar and web hosting site GoDaddy.com has also been asked to block urgently 174 websites found to be providing “high-class escort services.”

The high court, the HindustanTimes.com wrote, directed Kantaria to file an affidavit disclosing what action was taken against the offending websites, before scheduling the next hearing for June.
