LOS ANGELES — Smash Pictures Owner Dan Quinn and Stuart Wall, vice president of sales and production, were watching David O. Russel’s frenetic award magnet “American Hustle,” when it hit them — “what better film to parody?”
And so the studio's next major project was born...
Wall told XBIZ that casting for the fledgling parody will begin in February and production will kick off in March. He noted the yet-unannounced director is well-known for his adult parodies, but “we’re just holding off on releasing whom that will be just yet.”
Set in the seventies amidst a moral climate more perilous than its necklines, “American Hustle” takes an up-close-and-liberal look at the bizarre ABSCAM sting that pitted two con-artists, at the behest of the FBI, against prominent politicians. Russel injects ample sexual intrigue, ripe for hardcore adaptation.
“I love the “70’s, grainy feel to this film and it reminds me of ‘Deep Throat,’” Quinn said, revealing possible aesthetic directions for the upcoming parody.
Recently named Best Picture - Comedy at the Golden Globes and still kicking around theatres nationwide, “American Hustle” stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Louis C.K. and others, including a typically mobbed up Robert De Niro.
This is our biggest film of the year,” Wall confided. “We’re pretty pumped about this.”
