Vietnam Government to Start Adult Website

HANOI, Vietnam — Concerned that bans on privately run adult websites may be leaving Vietnamese couples with limited options for sex education, the communist-run government may soon launch its own sex-oriented website, aimed at remedying what it sees as certain sexual disorders on the rise across the country.

Citing a rising divorce rate, rampant prostitution and cases of couples avoiding sexual relations, Vietnam’s Deputy Director of the Institute for Social Development Khuat Thu Hong has called for “an orthodox sex website to help couples learn more about healthy sexual intercourse.”

Because Vietnam bans pornography and has gone to great lengths to shut down adult websites, few observers believe the site will rival those in operation around the world in terms of content.

According to Hong, the yet-to-be-named site will offer images — and possibly films for download — for educational purposes only.

Hong offered no precise details on the nature of the content that would be available on the site.

The Ministry of Culture and Information recently order cyber cafes to install software on all computers to monitor users and stop them from looking at pornographic websites. The government also requires citizens to report any illegal material they find online. Websites operating in Vietnam are required to register with the government, giving authorities strict control over the content its citizens see online.
