LOS ANGELES — The adult film award season continued Sunday night with the presentation of the fifth annual Tranny Awards, presented by Grooby.com, at Beyond the Stars Palace.
The night began as the luminaries of transsexual adult film gathered to walk the red carpet and celebrate their accomplishments in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, Calif., at the show's new venue. The old Hollywood theater-turned-event destination began to swell with transsexual stars before Chloe London kicked things off with a live guitar solo performance of original tunes.
Jujubee, who is best known for her participation in "Ru Paul's Drag Race Season 2," ascended the stage just after 10 to kick things off. "Welcome to the 5th Annual Tranny Awards," Jujubee bellowed. "Tonight we have 20 awards for those who have excelled in Tranny adult media."
The first award of the night went to Jane Marie for Shemale Yum Model of the Year.
"I'd like to thank my Mom and my family," she declared while proudly displaying her award. The next award was for Best Non-Typical Model of the Year, which went to Sandy Daniels. Transromantic Films received the award for Best DVD for "Forbidden Lovers," directed by Nica Noelle. She reacted later on Twitter, declaring, “I’m truly honored. I’m just ecstatic. I just got home and I’m still bouncing!”
Wendy Summers, dressed in a latex X-Men costume (1960's era if this author's comic memory holds), and Sadie Hawkins ascended to the stage to grab the trophy for Best Scene. "That scene," Hawkins said with a tinge of excitement, "was the first time I ever came in my hand and then slapped someone in the face!" The crowd erupted in laughter. Summers was called back to the stage a second time to receive the award for Best Internet Personality. Happily overwhelmed, Summers declared, “I shouldn’t have a career in transsexual porn but ya’ll like watching me masturbate.”
Jane Marie’s name would also be called twice more as well, once for the Reader’s Choice Fan Award and then again for the award for Best New Face. Marie’s familiar face led the Tranny Award’s host, Jujubee, to dub Jane Marie, “Beyonce of the Tranny Awards”
Sammy Mancini walked away with an award for Best Scene Producer and a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution toward advancing transsexual erotica with his groundbreaking series “She-Male Strokers." And Gia Darling took home the Lifetime Achievement Award for her career in front of the camera.
The fifth annual Tranny Awards broke new ground with the first award ever given to an FTM Performer for Best FTM Performer. That award went to Buck Angel, who gave an emotional video acceptance from Canada thanking all FTM performers for making his award possible. The night capped off with Morgan Bailey presenting Foxxy with the award for Best Hardcore Model.
The Tranny Awards was not just a celebration of transsexual performers and the strides they have made in the adult film industry, but also a celebration of the diversity, openness, and acceptance personified by the adult film industry. Or as Jujubee put it at the end of the ceremony, “It’s all about love and beauty, baby.”
