The official announcement came on Monday, coinciding with the parodic holiday, “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” invented in 1995 by two Americans who, for reasons unknown, proclaimed Sept. 19 as the day when everyone should say “Ahoy” instead of “Hello” and “Yar!” in place of essentially everything else.
The release of “Pirates” also coincides with a period in adult filmmaking that Mike Barry, director of adult operations at AdultDVD Empire, called the biggest season of the year for the industry.
“In a year that is producing a record number of big-budget, high-quality adult movie releases, ‘Pirates’ is leading the pack,” Barry said.
Although most of the industry may be going gonzo, Barry said high-end feature productions like “Pirates” still have marketing pull that their no-frills cousins simply couldn’t match. Barry reported that “Pirates” has been outselling the next highest pre-book title by nearly a 2-to-1 margin.
“The pre-orders for ‘Pirates’ have been amazing,” said Sonia Yanez, buyer for west coast distribution company New Beginnings. “This is a must-have.”
The cast and crew credits on “Pirates” read like a veritable Who’s Who in adult film: Jesse Jane, Carmen Luvana, Janine, Teagan Presley, Devon, Austyn Moore, Jenaveve Jolie, Tommy Gunn, Evan Stone and Steve St. Croix.
Produced by Digital Playground, co-produced by Adam & Eve and directed by Joone, the entire film was shot and mastered on hi-def and includes more than 300 special effects shots and 10 sex scenes.
Digital Playground President Samantha Lewis called “Pirates” the best investment her company had ever made.
“Our out-the-door numbers have already surpassed our projections for the entire first month,” she said. “Now that we have DVD’s shipping, our marketing efforts can really manifest.”
“Pirates” is scheduled to hit the streets on Sept. 26 with a triple disc set that offers both standard and WMV-HD DVD formats. Additional features include 16x9 widescreen format, bloopers, casting video, photo gallery, audio commentary with the stars, behind the scenes, special effects, and the standard bios, trailers and chapter index.
