U.S. Judge Keeps RealDVD Off the Market

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Tuesday prohibited RealNetworks Inc. from making its RealDVD software available to consumers until experts weigh in on the matter.

U.S. District Judge Marilyn Patel issued her ruling Tuesday following a hearing that included testimony from Seattle-based RealNetworks.

Patel imposed a temporary restraining order last week at the request of lawyers representing major Hollywood studios and DVD CCA, a trade group.

RealDVD is being marketed as software that allows a user to burn his/her DVDs onto a computer hard-drive. The studios and DVD CCA are alleging it makes them more susceptible to piracy.
