FCC Hires Anti-Porn Conservative

WASHINGTON — With the political climate in Washington becoming increasingly conservative, the Federal Communications Commission has ratcheted up the stakes by hiring anti-porn advocate Penny Nance as its newest advisor for the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis.

Nance joins the FCC from her lobbying work for Concerned Women for America, a conservative organization that promotes Christian family values. She also is the founder of the Kids First Coalition, which has fought vigorously against pornography and abortion rights, among a list of other right wing causes, and she has served as a lobbyist the Center for Reclaiming America. Nance also is an outspoken critic of homosexuality.

In her new position, Nance will advise FCC commissioners on indecency issues for the cable and broadcast industries and serve as a liaison on those issues to Congress for the FCC.

According to MediaWeek, Nance has testified twice before Congress, describing Internet pornography as a threat to children and speaking in favor of technology that lets DVD movie viewers skip past sexual and violent scenes. She also has gone on the record with the National Review as linking the possession of pornography to rape and child molestation.

Earlier this year, Nance had her name attached to a letter submitted to President Bush calling for stronger enforcement of indecency laws and cleaning up the airwaves.

Washington analysts are saying that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, newly appointed himself, chose Nance in an attempt to implement more stringent indecency rules and ramp up enforcement against media outlets. There also is speculation that the FCC is preparing to lodge several dozen indecency charges against broadcast and cable providers in the coming months.

In the 1990s, Nance was the principal organizer of a Washington rally protesting President Clinton’s sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky.

Nance was appointed by Chairman Martin, who was nominated by President George W. Bush to a Republican seat on the Commission, and was sworn in on July 3, 2001. He was designated chairman by President Bush on March 18, 2005.
