'Spam King' Dies in Double Murder, Suicide

BENNETT, Colo. — Four days after escaping from a minimum-security prison, spammer Eddie Davidson fatally shot his wife and child before killing himself last week.

Also known as the "Spam King," Davidson sent hundreds of thousands of unsolicited email messages from his home base in Bennett, Colo.

In June 2007, Davidson was indicted by a federal jury for violating the CAN SPAM Act. He pled guilty to the charges in December 2007. After being sentenced soon after to 21 months a minimum-security prison camp, Davidson escaped on July 20, 2008.

Along with his prison sentence, Davidson had to forfeit his personal property and pay more than $700,000 in fines.

On July 24, Davidson shot and killed his 29-year-old wife Amy Lee Ann Hill and their 3-year-old daughter. Also involved in the incident were a 7-month-old boy who was unhurt and a teenage girl who was shot in the neck but escaped by running to a neighbor's home. She's now being treated at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.

"What a nightmare and such a coward," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said. "Davidson imposed the 'death penalty' on family members for his own crime."

Davidson's last spamming operation was called Power Promoters.
