JRL Interviews HIV Expert Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan

LOS ANGELES — Gay online publication JRL presents an in-depth interview with leading HIV expert Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan, conducted by senior staff reporter Keith Witchka. The discussion covers the latest HIV testing and medical protocols, as well as information for gay industry producers and performers.

Witchka, who has been researching the controversial topic of barebacking in the gay industry for more than a year, said, "It is very difficult to get doctors to speak on HIV and AIDS on the record — especially when it pertains to the gay adult film industry.

"I have spent the last three months trying to have leaders in the AIDS medical community to sit down with me to do an in-depth interview on this issue but, I kept getting doors slammed in my face,” Witchka added. “When I ran into Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan at an AIDS conference last month, I was overwhelmed when he told me he would do the interview for JRL."

Jordan has specialized in infectious disease medicine for 29 years and graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1971. He has been featured on CNN, MSNBC and NBC, as well as given numerous speeches on the topic of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and internationally.

He is director of the OASIS Clinic, located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Care Center, which is part of the Los Angeles County Dept. of Health Services, and is affiliated also with St. Francis Medical Center and California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles.

In the interview, Jordan and Witchka address industry-specific topics of how gay adult producers, both condom-only and bareback, can promote safe sex in their movies. They also talk about the difficulties and pressures for HIV-positive performers in the gay industry, and the impact on the industry overall.
