Porn.net Sells for $400K at Domain Fest

LOS ANGELES — Bidders at a domain name auction in Hollywood snapped up domain names including Porn.net, Bookmarks.com and Alimony.com for five-and six-figure amounts this week.

The auction was part of Domain Fest, a three-day convention for domain name industry professionals at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. Domain Fest was founded by a division of Oversee.net, which owns Moniker.com.

Seminars included a look at the status of new proposed top-level domains including .asia and .mobi, handling cybersquatting charges and maximizing revenue from local advertisers.

Prices at the auction included Porn.net for $400,000, Bookmarks.com for $300,000, Alimony.com for $75,000, Butcher.com for $50,000 and SatinPanties.com for $10,000.

"Domainers," as they're called, can make money from selling ads on rudimentary sites with high-traffic domain names. Oversee.net Chief Executive Lawrence Ng said that the more empty a site was, the more likely visitors were to click on an ad.

"Intuitively, people believe you make more money putting up a building than you do leaving something as a parking lot," Oversee Executive Vice President Jeff Kupietzky said. "But you can usually make more from parking lots."
