Porn Video School Opening in Tokyo

TOKYO — A new film school is about to open in Tokyo’s Roppongi district offering how to make porn videos.

The “university,” which goes nameless, is offering a a six-month course in how to make blue-screen gems, known as AV in Japan. So far it has eight students.

The school plans to teach everything from how to scout actresses, actual filming techniques and audio-visual theories.

Costs to attend the porn university may seem high — pre-tuition fees are $1,850 (200,000 yen) and the general tuition fee is $9,050 (980,000 yen) — but the outlook of Japan’s adult industry is seen as growing.

With daily production costing between $9,000 (1 million yen) to $45,000 (5 million yen), Japan’s AV business is big. Top adult actors perform in typical one-day shoots for about $645 (70,000 yen).

One of the professors at the university is Tomonori Fujii, who produced the popular porn video "Sentaku-ya-Ken-chan" (translation: “Laundry operator Mr. Ken”).

The opening of the university in Tokyo comes at a time when porn, like in the United States, is slowly going mainstream, even though much of it is underground.

Japan maintains very strict laws on the sale and distribution of pornographic materials. Its definition for obscenity, which was established in 1957, is material that is "unnecessarily sexually stimulating, [which] damages the normal sexual sense of shame of ordinary people, or is against good sexual moral principles."
