Well, put that grip somewhere where it counts because it’s “National Masturbation Month.”
The month-long celebration recognizing the many ways we can pleasure ourselves has an apropos theme this year: “Party of One.”
San Francisco-based Good Vibrations, a two-store sex toy retailer, began celebrating “National Masturbation Month” in 1995, when then-Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders was fired for saying that masturbation should be discussed as part of young peoples' sex education. The words cost Elders her job.
This year, people from all over the world will be celebrating the annual Masturbate-a-Thon, raising funds for The Center for Sex & Culture of San Francisco, which wants to open a library and archive.
The Center for Sex & Culture plans to provide live streaming media through www.masturbate-a-thon.com of the San Francisco event slated for May 15.
Adult stars Michael Brandon, Nautica Thorn, Carol Queen and Michelle Tea will be on hand.
The pledge drive, like others, requires friends to sponsor them for a certain amount of money for every minute they masturbate.
Over the past nine years 1,570 participants have raised over $25,000.
The longest time recorded by a participating masturbator was six hours, 15 minutes.
