U.S. Women Prefer Self-Pleasuring to Intercourse, Tenga Survey Reveals

TOKYO — Sexual wellness company Tenga has released the results of their Tenga 2019 Self-Pleasure Report, a comprehensive survey of masturbation practices and pleasure product usage around the world.

The report surveyed over 10,000 men and women across nine countries, a feat the company boasts is “the largest of its kind.” The countries surveyed by the Tokyo-based Tenga, which focuses on “creating innovative sex toys for men and women,” were the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, Spain, Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea.

“Unlike other reports,” Tenga’s survey explains, “this study goes beyond simply measuring people’s masturbation and sexual behaviors and attitudes: it also explores the connection between pleasure – from oneself and during sex – and its impact on physical, emotional and societal well-being.”

The report features a number of useful infographics revealing its findings, including:

  • Most Americans consider masturbation to be a form of self-care which improves well-being.
  • While 50% of American men express a clear preference for intercourse, 37% of American women prefer masturbating alone.
  • Only 21% of American men prefer solitary fapping to intercourse and only 33% of American women rate making the beast with two backs over lone bean-flicking.
  • The number of Americans who enjoy both activities equally is even by gender, around 30%.
  • Ninety-one percent of American men and 78% of American women masturbate.
  • Millennials masturbate more frequently than Gen Z and Gen X.
  • People who identify as LGBTQ+ masturbate more than people who identify as heterosexual.
  • Americans say they tend to be horniest in the month of June, and touch themselves most between 7:30 - 11:30 p.m.
  • They also fantasize about previous partners more than about their current partner (33% vs. 29%).
  • Sex and masturbation are more stress-reducing than getting a massage, meditating or playing with animals, according to Americans.
  • According to Tenga, "men and women who use sex toys not only report feeling the most pleasure when compared to those who don't, but they also report higher satisfaction levels."
