War Machine Found Guilty on 29 Counts, Faces Possible Life Sentence

UPDATE (March 21, 11:30 a.m. — PDT): War Machine's sentencing date has been moved up to May 10 at 8:30 a.m.

LAS VEGAS — A jury has found War Machine guilty on 29 felony counts stemming from an attack on adult star and ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her friend in August 2014.

Sentencing is slated for June 5 at 8:30 a.m.

War Machine, a martial-arts fighter who also had a short stint in porn, did not testify during his two-week trial in Las Vegas.

During the reading of verdicts, War Machine appeared shaking his head in amazement. Several moments, he was even smiling. With the number of individual convictions on serious counts, War Machine is possibly facing a life sentence.

Jurors agreed to convict on 29 of the 34 charges but were deadlocked on two of the counts. The district attorney could retry two of the counts. He was found not guilty on two charges.

The jury was unable to reach verdicts when it came to the charges of attempted murder of Mack and friend Corey Thomas. The state has an option to rehear those charges.

Commenting to reporters outside the courtroom, state prosecutor Jacqueline Bluth said that Mack came off as a credible witness in the case, and that was key to each of the 29 counts that went against War Machine’s case.

“The jury believed her in regards to her previous conduct that she never reported, Bluth said. “What that says to domestic violence victims is even you didn’t report it right away, a jury can still believe you.”

Jay Leiderman, War Machine’s defense attorney, said: “Obviously, we're very disappointed with the verdicts and we'll do our best to help [him] moving forward.”

In a tweet late Monday, Mack, who was not present during the reading of the jury verdicts, said to her followers: "Today was a great victory for myself, as well as victims of [domestic violence] everywhere. Please continue to speak out, and stay strong!"
