Ventura County Star Urges 'No' Vote on Prop 60

Ventura County Star Urges 'No' Vote on Prop 60

VENTURA, Calif. — The Ventura County Star, in an editorial, says that Proposition 60 is “poorly written” and that voters should vote “no” on the proposal slated for the Nov. 8 ballot.

The Star’s editorial board called the AIDS Healthcare Foundation-sponsored initiative “overly broad” and that it would create “bad law under the guise of doing good” if passed by voters.

The Ventura daily newspaper is part of the much larger Gannett-operated USA Today Network that has media properties in 92 local markets across the U.S., including USA Today.

The Star emphasized that Prop 60 would allow private citizens to file civil suits to enforce the law and “reap a portion of any fines levied.”

“That kind of vigilantism is a bad idea,” the Star’s editorial board said.

Over the past month, numerous papers, including the Ventura County Star, have advocated against Prop 60.

The Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Fresno Bee, the Sacramento Bee, the Mercury News, the East Bay Times and the Orange County Register all have urged a “no” vote on the proposition. XBIZ's executive editorial director, in an opinion-editorial last week, also urged a “no” vote on Prop 60.
