Sultry Sweet Burlesque Celebrates 2-Year Anniversary at El Cid

LOS ANGELES — The Sultry Sweet Burlesque Show, which has hosted performances by adult royalty like Tera Patrick, is celebrating its two-year anniversary at El Cid in Los Angeles on Aug. 31.

“We are amazed at where the two-year journey has taken us and the people we have met along the way,” Sultry Sweet’s co-producer Rob Steiner told XBIZ. “Each one of the over 350 songs that we have performed in that time with our live seven-piece orchestra gives us a little insight to the dancer's interests and lifestyles, that we would've never discovered on our own and we have grown because of that, too.”

The anniversary show is billed as “Best of the Breast,” and will feature top burlesque performers such as Miss Donna Hood (Miss Viva Las Vegas 2014 and Queen of the Kansas City Burlesque Festival 2014) and Pearl Lux (Gold Medal winner BurlyPicks 2013). The show will be hosted by Miss Blanche DeBris, who hosts the annual Burlesque Hall of Fame Showcases in Las Vegas (referred to as the Olympics of Burlesque).

Tera Patrick headlined Sultry Sweet’s Christmas show and Steiner hopes to have her back in the lineup soon, pending her schedule. “We are so happy that she is performing burlesque around the world these days to help promote burlesque as an art form and the empowerment of women,” Steiner said.

When XBIZ attended Sultry Sweet earlier this year, the Silver Lake cave-esque venue was packed with upscale patrons, who dined on tapas and soaked in the host’s bawdy humor and eclectic topless acts — some on the stage, some swinging in suspended rings, some tatted, some in classic burlesque attire  — all in high spirits and minimal clothing.

Steiner sees an even grander tomorrow for Sultry Sweet, explaining, ”Our future is focused on evolving even more by creating thematic burlesque plays with story lines, producing Broadway- and Vegas-style showcases harking back to the glory days of burlesque in the 50’s and 60’s.” He also hopes to hit bigger venues and corporate events.

For now, Sultry Sweet remains nestled in the white stone bowels of El Cid, which in 1963 was transformed into a replica of a 16th century tavern and has operated for 50 years as a supper club and bar known for its live Flamenco performances.

Sultry Sweet Burlesque’s “Best of the Breast” event will begin at 7:30 p.m., with showtime at 8:30 p.m.
