U.K. Adviser Wants to Place All Porn Sites in .XXX

LONDON — Porn sites should be moved into the .xxx top-level domain, says an adviser to the British government on child Internet safety.

John Carr, one of the world’s leading authorities on children's and young people’s use of the Internet and associated new technologies, made his comments about .xxx after a report that the U.K. hosts more porn than any country but Holland and the U.S., according to a published report in the Daily Mail.

Carr's noted adult entrepreneurs can register adult sites under the country code for the U.K — .co.uk — through Nominet U.K.

Carr referred to the country code as the "national domain name," and he is demanding action over the matter.

"Nominet should have a policy that websites registered under the national domain name do not contain depraved or disgusting words,” Carr said. “People should not be able to register websites that bring disgrace to this country under the national domain name."

Nominet should ban websites containing words like “rape,” Carr said.

“The U.K. should not provide succor and comfort to porn merchants," he said.

The Daily Mail article said Metacert's Paul Walsh, who is under contract to provide services to .xxx registry ICM Registry, is responsible for the claim that Britain is third overall with 52 million pages of hosted porn, and will release proof of his claim this week.
