Feminist Porn Awards Honor Taormino, Other Pornographers

TORONTO — Village Voice sex columnist and erotic filmmaker Tristan Taormino did double duty as an honoree and panelist at the Vixens + Visionaries: Female Erotic Directors Revolutionizing Porn, an event produced by local feminist sex shop Good for Her.

Writing about her recent experience in Toronto, Taormino, who won an award for “Hottest Anal Adventure,” wondering if the women present at the show were laying the groundwork for something historic. While Taormino couldn’t resist hypothesizing that perhaps 20 years from now the attendees at the show would be treated to a green room sponsored by Ms. Magazine, she came to a more pragmatic conclusion regarding feminist porn.

“Some people may grasp what I’m trying to do,” Taormino wrote. “Others may simply see a hot fuck film that turns them on. Ideally, people get it and get off on it.”

Taormino, who wrote that for her feminist porn is about “character, choice and consciousness,” lauded the event organizers for providing a forum for feminist pornographers to share their diverse views.

“Some say no porn could ever be feminist,” Taormino wrote. “Lots of us disagree. But that doesn’t mean we agree on what it is.”

The winning films were selected by the Good for Her staff and had to meet at least two of the following criteria: A woman must be substantially involved in the creation of the film, the film must portray real orgasms and the film must expand the range of sexual expressions for women.

“We came up with the idea for the Feminist Porn Awards because people don’t know they have a choice when it comes to porn,” Chanelle Gallant, manager of Good for Her, said. “Yes, there’s a lot of bad porn out there. But there’s also some great porn being made by and for women. We wanted to recognize and celebrate the good porn makers as well as direct people to their work.”

Filmmakers Candida Royalle and her new Femme Productions protégé Abiola Abrams, along with S.M.U.T Magazine Editor Jen Bowers and Dana Dane of Erocktavision, were among those honored at the show.
