PETA Taps Sunny Leone for Indian Campaign

MUMBAI, India — You’d never expect adult star Sunny Leone to advocate less sex, but that’s exactly what she’s doing in a new ad campaign by India’s People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Of course the aim is to neuter dogs and cats.

Leone, who will appear in the new Bollywood erotic thriller “Jism 2,” due to premiere on Aug. 3 is doing the “Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing” campaign for free.

She said if people allow their pets to have “too much sex” and they are not sterilized, the streets of India would be flooded with strays, especially considering a number of Indians are now seeking pedigree breeds.

Leone said in a PETA statement, “I believe in not buying — and adopting. And it’s because there’s so many dogs out there that need a home, that were left on the streets. They just need that love, and if you can rescue an animal, then that’s one of the greatest gifts you can give.”

She added: “I believe that every single dog should be spayed and neutered. You don’t want to continue the cycle of homeless dogs or cats. And spaying and neutering also keeps them healthy. It prevents them from having different diseases that they can get if they are not.”

The star shares her home in Los Angeles with two rescued dogs.

According to India’s Wall Street Journal, strays account for the majority of India’s 19 million dogs and are blamed for spreading rabies to about 20,000 people, as well as more than 60 percent of dog bites every year.

Stray animals are causing a heated public debate that’s prompted Leone not only to add her voice to the problem, but the "Jism 2" producers are donating her wardrobe "including sexy lingerie worn by Leone in the film" to a PETA auction.

A PETA spokesman said that the money collected for the auction will be used to “create awareness for the welfare of homeless dogs in India.”

This is Leone’s first pro bono gig. Since her rise to Indian celebrity she has also endorsed Manforce Condoms and Chaze Mobile and has signed on to star in the sequel to the horror-thriller film “Ragini MMS 2.”
