Michigan Lawmaker Proposes Prison Porn Ban

LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan lawmaker is the latest anti-adult crusader to jump on the no porn in prison bandwagon.

Republican Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker of Van Buren County's Antwerp Township introduced Senate Bill 627 last Thursday that would bar Michigan prison inmates from receiving or possessing sexually explicit materials.

The new law would reform the Corrections Code of 1953.

Although the Department does allow “some nude photographs,” the new law would block all XXX materials.

Inmates currently cannot receive mail depicting certain sex acts and materials involving children.

A Michigan inmate, Kyle Richards, sued the state last June claiming that the prison system's Macomb County Jail’s ban on all porn is subjecting him to cruel and unusual punishment.

The new bill has been passed to the to the Judiciary Committee. If enacted, Michigan would join Pennsylvania and Florida as states banning porn in state prisons.

Connecticut will block state prison inmates from receiving adult material beginning June 30, 2012.
