Digital Playground Begins to Use QR Codes

VAN NUYS, Calif. — Digital Playground has started using QR coding on its boxcovers, as well as other media.

A QR code, or quick response code, is a matrix barcode readable by QR barcode readers employed by smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL and other data.

Digital Playground’s newest movie, “Top Guns,” is the first release to integrate the QR technology onto its boxcovers.

Going forward, all of Digital Playground’s movies, products and marketing materials will have QR codes.

Digital Playground founder Joone says it’s basically instant gratification.

“If someone is in a store holding a Digital Playground movie, they can scan the QR code off the box cover using their smartphone and watch the trailer right on the spot,” said Digital Playground founder Joone, who noted "it’s basically instant gratification."

Farley Cahen, Digital Playground's COO, called QR coding "a phenomenal vehicle to deliver rich media and other data via mobile to end-users."

"I’m confident that the ever-growing increase in smartphone adoption will cause more and more brands to follow Digital Playground’s lead by taking notice of and implementing QR codes,” he said.
