UCLA Panel to Discuss Condoms in Porn Thursday

LOS ANGELES — UCLA’s Reproductive Health Interest Group and Law Students for Reproductive Justice will present a panel tomorrow morning on condoms in the adult film industry.

The open-panel discussion will feature speakers Peter Kerndt from the L.A. County Department of Public Health; Whitney Engeran-Cordova from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation; Shelley Lubben, executive director of the Pink Cross Foundation; and adult performer Mr. Marcus.

The panel will be moderated by Cal/OSHA’s Pete Greyshock.

Event organizers say the goal of the discussion is to raise awareness and get students involved in workplace safety practices.

"We put this panel together to raise awareness about condoms in the adult film industry," said Adam Cohen, co-chair of the AFI subcommittee, part of the UCLA School of Public Health Reproductive Health Interest Group.

The audience will be mostly graduate level law students and public health students. Each panelist will speak for approximately five minutes, followed by students asking questions for the remaining time.

"We are trying to raise awareness of the issues because we think students should play a more active role regarding employee safety in the adult film industry."

Mr. Marcus, whose been in adult for 15 years, told XBIZ he plans to tell the panel that trying to mandate and enforce condom use is just not practical for the adult industry.

“I don’t have a problem with condoms. It’s regulating and mandating them that doesn’t apply to this industry. It’s simply not enforceable.”

He said that with the global proliferation of porn on the Internet, it’s impossible to enforce condom use because there’s no way to identify where or when the footage was shot.

Instead, he said more emphasis should be placed on regular testing procedures.

The discussion starts at 11:30 a.m. and goes to 1 p.m. at the UCLA School of Law, Room 1457.

Industry members are invited to attend.
