A glance at the adult Twitter aggregating site PornStarTweet.com reveals the site's widespread popularity, especially among performers, who use the site to stay on top of their daily lives.

Twitter offers microblogging services, meaning that users post very short messages to keep their friends updated on their current activities. Since its launch, the site also has morphed into a promotional and news-sharing platform.

Here's a rundown of some of the most popular Twitter apps:

• Twitteriffic emerged as one of the first Twitter apps for the iPhone and has recently come out with a new version to keep up with the competition.

• Twinkle combines Twitter functionality with geolocating technology to help nearby Twitter users find each other.

• Tweetsville packs a variety of powerful Twitter functions into one package, including the options to view a tweet's history, user profiles and threaded tweets.

• Twitterfon also includes many of the previously mentioned options, while also offering the intriguing option to search tweets (not users) by geolocation.

Leading tech blog TechCrunch praised the new version of Twitteriffic, with some caveats.

"Previously, Twitterrific seemed downright slow when compared to some of its newer rivals," said pundit MG Siegler. "But the new version is much faster — but it’s still not quite as fast as Tweetie. But it has some nice options to make this less of an issue, including the ability to set auto-refresh intervals for your tweet stream."
