LONDON — British sex shop chain Ann Summers has suspended sales of Willy Spread, a chocolate body spread that contains small quantities of the industrial chemical melamine, Britain's food regulator said Monday. The novelty chocolate spreads were manufactured in China and imported into the U.K.

"As a responsible retailer we have tested all of our chocolates and even before the FSA alert was issued had taken all relevant steps to remove the chocolate willy spread product that could be affected by this issue," Ann Summers officials said.

Some Chinese-made dairy products have been deliberately contaminated with melamine, a chemical that helps milk register as higher in protein than it actually is. The tainted milk products have caused to the deaths of four babies and sickened tens of thousands across China. The European Union has ordered testing of Chinese-made products including chocolate, candy and cookies that contain more than 15 percent milk powder.

The Food Standards Agency said the chocolate body spread had more than 50 times the allowed level of melamine.

"We've never had to put out an alert before on Willy Spread — chocolate-flavored or otherwise," the agency said on its website. "The risk from the melamine in these products is low and it is very unlikely to be harmful."
