It’s All Up To You

Sometimes it’s hard to get going. Especially when you’re just starting out, and you see all of the successful webmasters making what seems to be such easy money.

But keep this in mind: No matter who you’re envying, no matter how much they’re making, they all were once in your shoes. Eager to make the money and yet somberly staring at others, wishing that they were already basking in the glow of success.

You see, it’s all up to you. Only you can decide how successful you’re going to be. Only you can say whether or not you’re going to make it in this business.

This is a business, and the competition is fierce. One false move and you could be back at a 9-5 job, working hard to make someone else a success. But if you really want your own success, you can do it by remembering that it’s all up to you.

True, you can’t control the surfers. But you can certainly guide them. You can show them the goods and tell them what they want to hear. You can pry their wallets out of their pockets.

Your success doesn’t depend on others. Your success depends on you and your desire to make things happen. You have to decide how much you want it. Once you’ve decided how badly you want that money in your bank account, things start rolling.

You cannot continue to try the same old thing that everyone else has tried and expect to make any amount of decent money by doing it. The days of throwing a few html pages up and expecting the cash to start falling in your lap are long gone.

What does this mean? It means that you’re going to have to study and learn new things. It means that you’re going to have to start taking some of the responsibility for your success or failure. Learn from your mistakes and stop repeating them in the hopes of making it work.

Get out your notebook and take notes. Learn everything you can by reading articles, tutorials, and message boards. Go to conventions and talk to the successful people whom you idolize and learn the secrets that they’re willing to share. Believe me, many of them are very willing to share their knowledge with you.

Discuss your ideas with people and get their feedback. That feedback comes from several mistakes made or from successes found by doing what you’re trying to learn how to do. It’s all up to you. Take it or leave it, but remember that no one else is going to take the fall for you.

We’ve all fallen once or twice, even the most successful of the business. The old adage of “Quitters never win” is absolutely true, even if it means changes in your original plan. Don’t be afraid to fail. Falling doesn’t make you a failure; staying down does.

Above all else, remember your motivation. Everyone has something that he or she really wants. Everyone has something that he or she is willing to work for, and you’re no exception. You have to be willing to learn and grow or you’re going to go back to your day job. That’s just the way it is, whether it’s fair or not.

Don’t ever sell yourself short. No matter how simple or silly an idea may sound at the outset, there’s probably a market for it and you can probably find someone who’s tried it at least once.

Your success is all up to you. I can’t stress that enough. No matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes, you have to believe in yourself and trust yourself. Learn, learn, and learn some more, and never quit.
