WIA Profile: Jennifer McEwen

Each month, industry news media organization XBIZ spotlights the career accomplishments and outstanding contributions of Women in Adult. WIA profiles offer an intimate look at the professional lives of the industry's most influential female executives.

How did you get into this? What in your background prepared you for what you're doing now?

we all agreed that mobile applications are the next step for the adult industry

Our core team at MiKandi consists of members from the mobile space, and members from the adult novelty space. Before MiKandi, I handled Marketing and New Product Development for InnerVibe pleasure products. I was responsible for overall brand strategy and dynamic media marketing.

Talking to our friends in mobile last year, we all agreed that mobile applications are the next step for the adult industry, and we already had the perfect team in place. Our tech team's experience in launching mobile content platforms and our marketing team's involvement in the adult industry allowed us to really hit the ground running.

What changes have affected your work since you began it?

Most recently, Apple rejected over 5,000 previously approved apps from the App Store for being "overtly sexual," and that number is still growing. Apple's change in its already stringent guidelines has sent even more developers, content providers, and users our way. So, thank you, Apple!

What do you see as the challenges to working in online adult and how do you overcome them?

Most see the potential of the mobile app market, so convincing content providers to participate isn't difficult. The biggest challenge I have is ensuring that we continue to stay up to date with changes in mobile technology and never get complacent. Technology is always advancing, especially mobile. Eight months behind, and you're practically obsolete.

Does your work affect your personal life?

Yes, as an entrepreneur, you're always working. But in regards to working in adult specifically, no, it doesn't. I've always been honest and open that I work in the adult space. Once people get over the fact that it involves adult content, they realize that this is a business just like any other. I bet some are even jealous.

Do you have a personal motto or slogan that you follow?

"I'd accept even worse…, as long as I can feel in my belly that dark fire that is me, me alive. The only thing that would occur to me would be to thank life for allowing me to burn on." — Excerpt from A Happy Death, A. Camus.

This quote may seem dark at first glance, but to me it's about living life to its fullest and playing the hand you're dealt. In essence — carpe diem!

The Perils of Relying on ChatGPT for Legal Advice

It surprised me how many people admitted that they had used ChatGPT or similar services either to draft legal documents or to provide legal advice. “Surprised” is probably an understatement of my reaction to learning about this, as “horrified” more accurately describes my emotional response.
