Easy Come, Easy Go

So it’s Monday morning, and you’ve just rolled out of bed to check your email and your stats. Things look fabulous and you’re delighted with what you’ve made so far.

Tuesday word comes down the line that you’re not going to be paid for whatever reason. Maybe the program folds because of mismanagement or perhaps the company just wasn’t prepared for its own success. Not that it matters, but all those signups that you’ve garnered are now for nothing.

What do you do now? Besides getting angry, I mean. You can’t get your signups back, no matter what you do. Or can you?

First suggestion would be to contact the company in question, if that’s at all possible. Many times, however, they refuse to answer calls or emails, and before you know it, they’ve moved from the area where they once did business. So now what?

If you can’t get in touch with them, ask around. Someone might know something that you don’t. Be polite, but be consistent. Make sure you have all of your information ready and waiting for the inevitable questions that might come back to you.

If you can prove that you didn’t get paid, or if you got paid, but the check(s) bounced, keep the checks! Always be able to back up your claims of lost cash. If you can’t prove it, then did they really bounce or skip out on you?

If you’re new to a sponsor, always, ALWAYS get some good screen caps of your stats. I recommend this on a weekly basis. If that sponsor should go under, you’ll have your screen caps to show how much is owed.

Always keep any correspondence concerning any deals you may make. This includes emails, ICQ logs, and snail mail. If need be, you can always print them out to use later.

If things get ugly, refer to an attorney through which all of your correspondence can go. There are many adult-friendly attorneys out there. They can advise you and help you get the money that you should have.

In some cases, a former sponsor can become threatening. Don’t let them push you around. They’ll be glad to offer you only a partial payment and then threaten you if you ask for the remainder. Keep all correspondence in writing with them. If push comes to shove, (so to speak), you can tap your own phone and record your conversations with them.

Above all else, if you know you’re being cheated, don’t just let it happen. Most sponsors are honest companies who will go out of their way to help you if you need it, after all, they don’t succeed until you do. But if a company cheats you out of your hard-earned money, it’s time to blow the whistle. Have your proof in hand and ready to go at a moment’s notice, try to contact the company in question to see if maybe it was a clerical error, (which does happen from time to time; we’re all human!), and then ask around to see if anyone else has had any issues with the company. If the company has a history of being less-than-honest, it’s time to call them out.

With assistance from your attorney, you can even file a lawsuit against the company. If other people are also in the same boat as you, a class-action suit could be in the making. Make absolutely sure that it’s the company’s fault and not yours, then go forth and make sure they think twice about ever screwing over their affiliates!
