Does It Really Matter Who You Know?

Once upon a time, there was a magical thing called the Internet. This Internet was home to many informational things called websites. These websites could teach, inform, and entertain the newly emerging masses called “Net Geeks”.

Then one day, someone decided to put a site dedicated to pornography online and charged money to view it. Hundreds of people found it and paid for it, and a new era of the adult industry was born.

Some of the first pioneers of Internet porn are still working hard to maintain the fortunes they made by getting in when they did. Still others have taken their earnings and invested them, retiring from the business to lead happily wealthy lives.

But for the people coming into this business, what will motivate them to continue when it’s no longer what you know but who you know? There are many talented designers and writers, photographers and videographers out there that it often seems like new people are hard-pressed to learn fast. Which is true.

However, without meeting and networking with the folks who have been in the business for years, few of the new people are going to make money. You can do it, but it will be incredibly difficult to do.

Everyone, new or old, has had to learn. The first Internet pornographers didn’t have much to go on, except some HTML and pictures and a billing processor. But now, with all the new technology being developed, there is a plethora of things that the novice can do.

One of the things that every novice should do, however, is network. Ask questions, learn by example, and don’t be afraid of the millionaires who post on the message boards. (Yes, there really are some very rich people who post on the boards. Find them, learn from them!)

There is an old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Many times that can be applied to Internet businesses. The people who have been making the money often have no problem with showing you how to do it, but you’re going to have to be the one to do it. You can’t be lazy and rely on them to do it for you. That’s not how it works.

In this business, yes, often it is who you know, coupled with what you know, that will make you the money. You have to know who to ask for help, and you have to know what to ask. Go to the gatherings and the conventions, network with people you meet, and show that you’re really making an effort to make the money. People will remember that.

I find that when someone asks a legitimate question that hasn’t been asked forty times already, an answer full of thought is often forthcoming. How to find out if your question has already been asked forty times? Read the back posts. You might learn more than what you’re asking as well.

In the end, if you work hard and ask good questions of the right people, you’ll be one of the people that can answer the questions. You will probably have the money to show for it as well. And that’s what we’re all after; fortune and the ability to be able to honestly say that we know someone worth knowing.
