Dev Depot: NanoGallery, Next-gen Galleries With a Touch-enabled Jquery Plugin
Offering image gallery creation simplified, NanoGallery (nanogallery.brisbois.fr) is a responsive, lightweight and touch enabled jQuery gallery plugin that pulls its images from remote resources.
As for why there was a need for yet another jQuery gallery plugin, script author Kris B acknowledges that while there are many excellent galleries for jQuery and other frameworks, he was unable to find one that really fit his main requirements on a new project — that it be responsive and mobile friendly, have the ability to easily and quickly publish new photos and be able to organize the photos into albums.
“I didn’t want to spend time [on] rich publishing features, so I chose to use an online storage service like Flickr [because it] already has great upload features for desktops and mobile devices,” Kris B says. “You can add titles, descriptions, tags and you can arrange photos in photosets.”
With this part of the project done, Kris focused on adding other features, resulting in nanoGallery.
“I thought that other people have the same needs as me, so I decided to share my work,” Kris adds, opening the door for those who wish to follow in his footsteps with this flexible image gallery solution.
Let’s take a closer look:
According to its developer, NanoGallery allows users to display thumbnail images along with a title and description, accompanied by smooth animations and intuitive pagination. Full-size images are then displayed via a popup modal window.
NanoGallery supports images pulled from the cloud, including those published to Flickr, Google+, Picasa and more, automatically adding images to your galleries without the need for manual uploads. Thumbnails are generated automatically and the photos may be displayed using custom gallery designs.
Mobile friendly, NanoGallery is touch screen enabled and responsive, and allows users to download small images for small displays as a way of minimizing bandwidth consumption.
A variety of eye-catching 2D and 3D hover effects, which can be combined for further possibilities, are available to spice up your portfolio; while multi-level navigation, including breadcrumbs to navigate through images organized into photo albums, offers an unlimited number of sub-levels, for versatility.
NanoGallery is user friendly, providing support for using a web browser’s back and forward buttons for navigation.
Easy to setup and highly customizable, NanoGallery is designed to be as simple as possible to add to your site, with many options available for advanced users who wish to tweak the gallery’s basic settings.
NanoGallery also allows customization of its color scheme and layout without editing CCS files and is also able to use pre-defined or custom themes. Although compatible with older browsers, NanoGallery provides CSS3 acceleration support for modern browsers, and has been successfully tested with Twitter Boostrap, Foundation, Gumby and other front-end frameworks.
