WIA Profile: Alison Vives

What is your role and responsibility at your company?

I am primarily responsible for working with new project development and working closely with each department manager to achieve our company goals both short-term and long-term. Our company is very goal- and growth-oriented and things are constantly changing, so to keep up with everything, I see my function as being as organized as I can possibly be. I joke with the other managers who have many fond pet names for me such as “Anal Alli” or the “WV” (wonder vagina).

Give us a typical Monday at your desk?

I have a definite first-hour routine of checking email, answering ICQs, checking statistics and looking into any testing results we've been doing. On Mondays, I tend to get started on my ride in by getting mentally prepared for what ongoing projects are being worked on, and then once at work, and after my routine, I start with follow-ups and updates so I can get an idea of what the week is looking like. Monday also tends to include a weekly meeting with Kevin regarding any new projects that have been discussed but are not yet implemented as well as reviews of past or ongoing projects. Mondays and Tuesdays definitely outline the entire week and determine what meetings are necessary and what the priorities are.

What do you think is your greatest challenge or asset being a woman in the adult industry?

As a woman in the industry, I used to be slightly timid when speaking to others, but I feel I got over that quickly once I realized that being a woman has made it easier to establish professional relationships. I truly value the relationships I've developed in the industry. I used to think there was no loyalty in an industry like this, but I have found that is not true.

What strategies do you use to maintain balance in your life?

I'm a very Zen-like person. I need fulfillment in all areas of my life, and my No. 1 rule is that life is about living. I lead a healthy lifestyle with sports and exercise. I love to travel and tend to save up all my vacation time in order to take one long vacation (Scandinavia this year, South America next year). I also try to meditate and do my best to be positive and reflect positive energy. I have a great job and career and a wonderful home life that I deeply appreciate. I know that everything I want is within myself, so my balance comes from within.

What advice would you give other women who want to enter your field?

My advice, whether for a man or a woman, would be to work for the company as if it's your own and to do your best to understand others. Taking ownership allows you to produce quality work with the right intentions. Understanding others is probably the most difficult thing to do, but once everyone is on the same page in life or in business, everything becomes a lot easier and the communication just flows. Specifically for women who want to keep up with all the guys, I would say the No. 1 quality would be to have a good sense of humor. That is one pattern I've seen with the many successful women I've met. They all seem to have a good time and keep it business when needed.
