Crush groove

I talked with Hustler director Wit Maverick about his recent release, the girl-on-girl extravaganza Crush.

GP: Wit, Why girls?

WM: Why not girls?

GP: Good point. On the boxcover, Faith is peeking out from behind an ass. Whose ass is it?

WM: That is Ryder's ass. The prettiest face in the movie right next to the hottest ass.

Ryder's ass bears no relation to the long-haul trucking company involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombings nor is its owner married to Will Ryder.

GP: This looks like a rented mansion movie rather than a somebody's warehouse movie.

WM: We shot at this outrageous house in the Hollywood Hills. the owner is OCD and is continually working on the house.

GP: Is it Nomar Garciaparra or Kurrupt?

WM. No. The house is different every time you go there, so it's easy to go back.

GP: Are there considerations when directing an all-girl feature that aren't present in other types of movie?

WM: You have to double-think your casting. It is not enough for a girl to be hot. The girls have to be hot together.

GP: Like Steel Magnolias.

WM: No, like Thelma & Louise.

GP: You are also an artsy fartsy theatre director. What aspects of your theatre training do you bring to your porn directing? Are there improvisational exercises? Oral warmups? Trust fucks?

WM: Patience. And, yes, improv is a big part of what we do here. I often refer to it as the art of compromise.

GP: Sort of like when I'm trying to park at Hustler Hollywood and I can choose to either get a ticket there or across the street at the Whiskey. Do you ever let actors make decisions for themselves or, like many directors, do you feel only contempt for your performers?

WM: Do you mind if I open up to you?

GP: I am America's beloved porn journalist.

WM: As cool as the house was, it was a little tight. Consequently, we were all over each other. I had the PA rubbing baby oil on the girls as I argued lighting and dodging around the stills session. The amazing thing was that every single girl was on time! You know, you book 11 girls over two days, you are rolling the dice. I couldn't have been happier with the cast or crew. I think the highlight for me was when we were setting up for the group scene. Of course it was the last scene of the night and we were behind. I came in to the room with Annika, Valerie and Sophia and found three exuberant girls thrilled to be together. They used the extra prep time to plot a take over of their scene. Annika announced that she already had the scene directed and she knew how to get everybody off. I sat back and said, "Roll tape."

Crush stars Lexi Love, Felix Vicious, Daisy Marie, Avena Lee, Isabelle Sky, Ryder, Annika, Sophia, Valerie Vasquez, and Faith.
