Ditto Clipboard Manager

Here's a handy OpenSource utility that could become a favorite among users needing a flexible solution to reusing clip text — or just about any other items they want to copy and paste into the same file — or anywhere elsewhere, even on another computer.

According to its maker, Ditto is an extension to the standard Windows clipboard that saves each item placed on the clipboard, allowing access to any of those items later on. Ditto allows its users to save any type of information that can be put on the clipboard, including text, images, HTML, custom formats and more.

The software features an easy-to-use interface that allows users to search and paste previous copy entries and can keep multiple computers' clipboards in sync — encrypting data when sent over a network.

Accessed from a tray icon or global hotkey, Ditto allows clipboard entries to be selected either by a double click, the enter key or drag-and-drop, pasting the selected entry into any window that accepts standard copy/paste entries.

Thumbnail versions of copied images may be displayed within Ditto to make selecting from a number of graphics files easier and more visually oriented.

And on a "visual" note, Ditto's makers address the question of why its solution is preferable to using the built-in copy bins offered in Office or VS.Net, by noting that VS.Net only collects pastes from inside Visual Studio, which do not persist after the application is closed. There is also no way to paste these copy bin clips to an external application, search them or store large numbers of them.

Full Unicode support for the display of foreign characters and UTF-8 support for multiple language files is offered. An SQLite database (www.sqlite.org) is required for use.

Ditto can be downloaded for free at www.ditto-cp.sourceforge.net.
