FSC to Hold East Coast Summit

NEW YORK – The Free Speech Coalition’s East Coast members’ meeting will coincide with this week’s Erotic Expo NY on May 19. The featured speaker will be First Amendment attorney H. Louis Sirkin.

Sirkin represented the Coalition in former Attorney General John Ashcroft’s unsuccessful case against the group in 2001. He also represented Rob Zicari of Extreme Associates and won a dismissal of the government’s obscenity case against the company this year. Sirkin is a partner in the Cincinnati firm Sirkin, Pinales & Schwartz LLP.

FSC Executive Director Michelle Freridge believes that the recent wave of Justice Department campaigns against the adult industry are politically motivated and, worse, moot.

“The vast majority of Americans do not support extreme fundamentalist views,” she told XBiz. “A lot of their communications and posturing appear to be appeasing small but vocal pro-censorship groups.”

Freridge said that Sirkin will address legal issues in the adult industry with emphasis on obscenity law. “The Extreme case has made a lot of what they’re (the DOJ) saying moot,” she said. “Until they challenge the Extreme case and win, all they can do is prosecute and freeze people’s assets. But this has shown that similar cases cannot be won.”

“The prosecutions appear to be politically motivated, a waste of government resources and taxpayers’ money.”

FSC membership coordinator Rashaan Hayes and members of the board of directors will meet and greet FSC members and other interested industry participants at the New York Expo. New and continuing supporters will have the opportunity to register as members, make a donation and pick up recent FSC publications.

The FSC holds several membership meetings each year, almost always concurrent with a major trade show or event. On May 26, it will host its quarterly meeting in Woodland Hills, Calif. Also, it will preside over a golf tournament and an “Evening with the Stars” awards ceremony on July 17.
