Political Party Vows to Lift Australia’s Porn Ban

CANBERRA, Australia — A representative of Australia’s Liberty and Democracy Party (LDP) said this week that his party would lift the ban on selling sexually explicit materials that covers most of the country and revamp prostitution laws if it gains sufficient control in an upcoming election.

John Humphreys, the LDP’s Queensland-based candidate for the Senate, said that the ban derided the country’s current adult entertainment and prostitution laws, and said that the LDP will overhaul those laws, given the chance.

“Every other political party has an unhealthy interest in our sex lives,” Humphreys said. “The LDP is committed to getting [Prime Minister] John Howard and [Labor Party leader] Kevin Rudd out of our bedrooms.”

Humphreys pointed out that while it is legal to purchase adult videos in Australia, such videos cannot be obtained legally in most of the country.

“It is already legal to buy X-rated videos in Australia,” Humphreys said. “However, in one of our more stupid laws, it is illegal to sell X-rated videos everywhere except the [Australian Capital Territory].”

Humphreys added that Australia’s laws against prostitution are “also absurd.”

“The sex lives of Australians should be no business of the government,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys said that his party understands that “pornography and prostitution go against the moral and religious beliefs of some Australians,” but added that “we do not generally believe that it is appropriate to enforce religious views on other people.”

“So long as nobody is hurt, people should be left relatively free to live their own lives,” Humphreys said.

Philosophically, the LDP is similar to the Libertarian Party in the U.S. On its website, the LDP stated its support for “free markets and freedom of choice” and “free trade in ideas and culture.”

“The LDP supports individuals’ ownership of themselves and their right to pursue their own lifestyles, make their own decisions and engage in their own hobbies and interests as long as they do not directly harm other people or their property,” the LDP said on its website. “However, with freedom comes responsibility. The LDP believes that individuals should also take responsibility for their own decisions in life.”
