Louisiana City Council Bans All New Adult Stores

BAKER, La. — The City Council gave final approval of an ordinance that bans any new adult-oriented businesses from operating in the city.

The ordinance also requires all "sexually oriented" businesses to operate at least 1,000 feet from public facilities, such as schools, parks and libraries.

The law states any business with 33 percent of its stock and services having to do with adult entertainment is considered sexually oriented. This would include adult-themed arcades, bookstores, cabarets, theaters, modeling studios and escort services.

However, City Attorney Ron Wall said that the new ordinance does not affect existing businesses, included a local video rental store that carries adult titles. The law also does not prevent transfer of adult-business ownership.

The ordinance's contradiction was not explained at the Tuesday meeting.
