LOS ANGELES — As Google and Yahoo roll out new video search features, a new report released Wednesday backs the search engines’ beliefs that streaming media use is surging.

AccuStream iMedia Research said that video streams grew by 80 percent in 2004 to 14.2 billion and aggregate tuning hours for Internet music radio expanded by 76 percent.

Seventy-nine percent of video streams served were viewed at broadband rates, and those streams viewed by each unique user rose to 13.9 per month in 2004 compared to 10.2 in 2003, a 36 percent increase.

"The appetite for streaming video by broadband users at work and home continues to drive growth in streaming media," AccuStream's Paul A. Palumbo said.

AccuStream’s report, “Streaming Media 2004-2007: Market Development and User Data Analysis,” provides detailed full-year streaming media usage statistics and market data by audience demographic, content category, bit rate, site, network, aggregator and includes media consumption patterns of high-speed users, forecasts and historical comparisons.

Yahoo has released a beta version of a video search feature on its website since Dec. 14. The search feature is available directly on its homepage. Google this week stepped into the video search arena to rival the video search feature by Yahoo.

"Major portals like Yahoo clearly understand that audience flow is key to streaming media growth and increased revenue," Palumbo said.
