XBIZ: Top 10 Best Adult Movies of 2012

LOS ANGELES — From bad romance to global destruction, porn producers proved in 2012 that there was more on their minds than sex. Even vampire and gladiator epics were grounded in human emotion, delving into character and themes of betrayal, despair, hope and heroism.
Of course, that’s not to say there wasn’t some levity. Sexy nurses were on hand with a shot of the traditional, an ode to the American sex comedy provided nostalgia and laughs and romantic comedies rose above cliché to give fans genuinely funny moments rooted in the clumsy and awkward — sometimes ugly — places people find love.
As the final countdown to the industry’s biggest awards show of the year begins, XBIZ Magazine is pleased to present The Top Adult Movies of 2012, each of which has been nominated for Feature Movie of the Year for the 2013 XBIZ Awards on Jan. 11 in Los Angeles.

CountdownWicked PicturesSet six days before a massive asteroid obliterates the earth, Brad Armstrong’s “Countdown” follows groups of people as they prepare for their imminent demise. Despite the differences in their cultural, social and economic backgrounds, they are all either comforted by the love they experienced in their lives or desperate to make one final connection. “Countdown” features an all-star cast that includes Wicked exclusives Jessica Drake and Kaylani Lei, noted adult actors Seth Gamble and India Summer and director Armstrong, who also wrote the script. -
Nurses 2Digital PlaygroundDigital Playground made fans and retailers feel better this year with the release of director Robby D’s “Nurses 2,” the eagerly anticipated sequel to its 2009 chart-topper. DP exclusives Jesse Jane and Riley Steele return for the follow-up that also includes contract players Kayden Kross, Selena Rose and BiBi Jones. The three-hour feature, about the sex-crazed shenanigans occurring at a hospital for the horny, has nine sex scenes, one of which is an all-star orgy. Alexis Texas, Nikita Von James and crossover sensation James Deen co-star. -
Love, Marriage & Other Bad IdeasNew SensationsDr. Paul Highland (Richie Calhoun) is a marriage counselor who would just as soon advise people to tie a noose around their necks than to tie the proverbial knot. Embittered by a failed relationship, he can no longer feign interest in the problems his patients present to him every day. That is until he meets April (Alison Tyler), a bride-to-be more scared of commitment than he. Eddie Powell directs from a script by Jacky St. James. Co-stars include Lexi Belle, Natasha Nice, Dana DeArmond and Xander Corvus. -
Revenge of the PetitesAMKingdom/Exile DistributionIndie filmmaker Harry Sparks made his adult directorial debut with AMKingdom’s first scripted feature “Revenge of the Petites.” A funny and thoughtful homage to American coming-of-age comedies such as “Revenge of the Nerds,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “American Pie,” the film follows a pair of college coeds, played by Marie McCray and Skin Diamond, as they attempt to get payback after being bamboozled into performing a sex act online by a group of mean-spirited sorority girls. -
Spartacus MMXII The BeginningLondon-Gunn Films/Miko Lee Productions/Wicked Pictures“Spartacus MMXII: The Beginning” is London-Gunn Films and Miko Lee Productions’ X-rated re-imagining of the Spartacus legend. Writer and director Marcus London stars as the iconic slave-turned-gladiator. The film, which draws inspiration from such stylish sword-and-sandal epics as “300,” “Gladiator” and the cable series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” enthralls with its deft cinematography, choreographed stunts, authentic costumes and savage sex scenes. -
The FourAdam & Eve PicturesVisionary director Michael Ninn’s long-delayed passion project “The Four” was released this year by Adam & Eve to big sales and critical acclaim. Meant as an X-rated companion piece to Zach Snyder’s 2006 blockbuster “300,” the film is set after the Battle of Thermopylae has been lost by King Leonidas and his men. Four Spartan widows — Brea Bennett, Renee Perez, Cassidey and Nikki Kane — vow revenge and plot to kill Persian King Xerxes. -
The Friend ZoneNew SensationsWhat happens when average-joe Kevin (Anthony Rosano) uses a fake online dating profile to seduce his sexy friend and roommate Gina (Riley Reid)? He breaks the friendship zone in a manner he didn’t quite expect and that may prove irreparable. Writer Jacky St. James revisits familiar rom-com ground, but delivers an engaging story filled with heartfelt drama and laugh-out-loud surprises, pulled off by a talented cast that is obviously having fun. -
TornNew SensationsDrew (Steven St. Croix) is a man who has been married for 20 years to a woman (India Summer) who is independent, smart and beautiful. These are all traits that he once found attractive, but has now grown to resent in the wake of meeting 25-year-old photographer Mimi, a free-spirit who hangs on his every word and lives to satisfy him sexually. Director Eddie Powell and screenwriter Jacky St. James take a break from romantic comedy to tackle infidelity in this provocative adult drama. -
VoraciousEvil AngelAcclaimed producer and director John Stagliano bites into vampire folklore with “Voracious,” a gothic tale of love and lust that finds Brooklyn Lee playing a vamp at ends with her supernatural urges. Manuel Ferrara plays the man out to save her, while Rocco Siffredi and Omar Galanti portray ancient bloodsuckers intent on protecting their order. Originally released as a 10-episode web series, the film is now available as a four-disc collector’s set. -
WastelandElegant Angel“Wasteland,” an emotional tale of two estranged childhood girlfriends who reconnect after a night of extraordinary experiences, features career-defining performances from leads Lily Carter and Lily LaBeau, and marks 2012 XBIZ Award-winning writer/director Graham Travis’ (“Portrait of a Call Girl”) second feature film.
