NONTHABURI, Thailand — Nonthaburi's Muang district police chief is the first senior police officer to feel the heat in the government's latest crackdown on pornography.

Office Minister Newin Chidchob said the prime minister had ordered national police chief Police General Kowit Wattana to transfer Police Colonel Wasant Booncharoen for repeated negligence in failing to eliminate pornography within his jurisdiction.

The Nonthaburi boat pier is a known distribution centre of adult video CDs.

The prime minister on Jan. 10 assigned Newin to act on his behalf and wipe out all types of adult content, including cartoons, advertisements, video games and websites. The crackdown was launched on Feb. 1.

Newin also hosts a radio show on FM 105, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., during which people can give information on the sale and distribution of pornography.
