New Blu-ray Technology Moves Up Capacity by One-Third

TOKYO — Blu-ray DVDs soon will have more capacity — one-third more — allowing for additional features that may help retailers sell more adult and mainstream DVDs.

Sony is close to launching technology that would increase the capacity of Blu-ray discs from 25 Gbytes to 33.4 Gbytes, according to Nikkei Electronics Asia.

The new technology uses i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation), a processor-intensive method that allows players to properly calculate the read-error rate, a stumbling block that prevented larger capacity discs.

Both Sony and Panasonic jointly developed the technology that was publicized in October.

Sony is asking the Blu-ray Disc Association to adopt i-MLSE.
