Global Adult Industry Earns $97B Annually? $13.3B in U.S.? Really?

Diane Duke
Conservative media activist group Family Safe Media has reported that the international adult industry takes in $97B a year, with $13.3B for the U.S. industry. We would LOVE to know where they get their numbers… and if they might be trying to inspire fear & loathing by giving the impression that people in the adult industry are rolling in dough.

The adult industry is largely made up of businesses that are privately owned, so that they are not obligated to publish their financials. FSM’s figure is obviously an estimate (and it would be interesting to know how they did their market research). As many industry professionals will tell you, all areas have of adult entertainment have been greatly affected by the economic crisis, online piracy, changing media platforms and consumer attitudes. Just sayin’ – jc
