Default Which state purchases the most porn? It's not who you think.

A professor at the Harvard Business analyzed credit card data from 2006 to 2008 regarding payment for online adult entertainment based on the postal codes of the purchasers.

The largest relative online porn purchasing state was Utah, which averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1,000 home Internet broadband users. Montana, on the other hand, came in last as an adult entertainment purchasing state, with 1.92 adult content subscriptions per 1,000 home Internet broadband users.

Also, 36% of Internet users visit at least one adult Web site each month, as of June, 2008. An average visit to an adult site goes for 11.6 minutes, and of people who access at least on such site a month, they actually visit adult Web sites an average of 7.7 times per month.

http://www.mondaq.com/article.asp?articleid=76660.

After listening to Utah Senator Orrin Hatch blast Obama's deputy attorney general nominee David Ogden over his stance on "adult entertainment industry issues" and his past representation of adult industries, the irony here is just too good. Let's hope ol' Orrin sees a copy of this study.

Default Never believe a statistics you hadn't falsified yourself !

Google Analytics is giving me totally different answers for my sites, with Utah in position 33 only and Montana, Vermont and S.Dakota being the last ones ranked in 48-50 only amongst the 50 states. Access leader is California, followed by NY, FL, PA and TX.

Therefore I don't believe in that statistics except if Montana and Utah would be the centers of the male gays (whom I do not offer on my site) and therefore turning the statistics toward the other site. But getting first rank from rank 49 ?? I really believe that the statistics is fake as reality is proving quite the contrary.

In terms of international access the USA is still the leader by far, followed by Germany, the UK, Canada and France. Japan is 7th, Australia 9th, Russia 11th, Brazil 14th.

Interestingly conservative states like India are top ranked as 23rd., China as 16th, Singapore 32nd, and Pakistan (!!) 35th ! Kuwait (93rd) and even the conservativ Iran with surprisingly 788 access attempts and long 12 minutes average access time and Saudi Arabia with 494 access attempts and 11 minutes average accesstime do quite surprise me. I believe that there is still the death penalty for viewing porn in these states.

Last in the list are Benin, Laos and Niger, probably with the one and only monthly access of their government censorship machine. But there are 203 states internationally accessing an erotic website and that confirms that erotic and porn are being requested world wide, no matter of religion, political system or race.

Gunter, I agree to some extent of what you are saying about check your sources, however, based on CC data, it's hard to dispute the traffic in the study only.

Guenter, I think you're confusing the location of visitors to your site with the location of members who actually purchased porn — which is what the story was about...

I get folks from Bangladesh too, but that doesn't mean they're paying customers...

Analytics only counts the number of surfers, I get lots of surfers from the East Coast and I am assuming most of the population in the US lives on the East Coast or maybe the internet penetration is higher there, nothing to do with them searching for porn more than the others.

The study has into account the number of subscriptions divided by the number of people living in the state. But I have my doubts regarding that study, as I am not sure they can identify every single adult transaction out there. Porn purchases are not meant to figure as "porn purchase" on the credit card statement.

But I'll do a research in my database and take the past 10 years of actual sales (!!) as an example. Having no time before Easter but will come back with actual % sales data after Easter split by state. My heuristics tell me that in the USA they're not that different than the access data.

However, I do not know if the statistics was cleaned by the number of population. E.g. if there are 9 times more sales in California than In utah but a much higher population in CA than in UT (I only guess there is a 70 times higher population in California)), perhaps Utah would easily win in a "porn sales/per citizen" statistics easily. But in absolute porn sales ? Never !

You also have to take into account that the population in Utah versus places like California, NY and FL. You may have more subscriptions 'per capita' in Utah, but still have a lot more total subscriptions in the more populated states. The original statistics were based on subscriptions per 1000 households, not total subscriptions.

yes, that's probably the solution of the question as they did the statistics "per capita of internet connections" but not in absolute numbers. But such numbers do not mean that Utah is a significant country of porn consumers. It means rather that there are probably less internet connections per capita.
